Not All Varifocals Are Created Equal.

A GUIDE TO VARIFOCALS

Why precision, design and measurements matter.

why your vision is changing

The natural lenses in our eyes are flexible and adjust their focus as we look at objects at different distances. As we age, however, those lenses stiffen reducing their ability to focus. Therefore, if you’re noticing small shifts in your sight and are struggling to switch between screens and paperwork, or just feeling eye fatigue by the end of the day — you're not alone.
This process is known as presbyopia. It is a completely natural part of ageing and typically begins in your early 40s.

What matters most is not if this change happens but how it’s managed. With the right lens design and expert guidance, vision can remain seamless, comfortable and effortless across every distance.

what are varifocal lenses?

Varifocals (also known as progressive lenses) are multi-functional lenses that correct your vision at different working distances — blending near, intermediate and distance prescriptions into one single lens. Unlike bifocals, they have no visible line, offering a seamless transition. And at J.HYDE, we go even further — with premium lens technology and expert measurements that ensure you are given the best possible outcome.

NOT ALL VARIFOCALS ARE CREATED EQUAL

While all varifocals aim to correct vision at multiple distances, the experience they deliver can vary significantly.

Many lenses are produced using standard designs, offering limited personalisation and narrower zones of clarity. They may function, but often require compromise — more head movement, longer adaptation, or visual fatigue over time.

At J.HYDE, our varifocals are built around ZEISS lens technology— a global leader in optical engineering. ZEISS designs lenses using advanced research, precision manufacturing and individualised lens calculations that go far beyond standard varifocal production.

Rather than relying on one-size-fits-most designs, ZEISS varifocals are tailored to the wayyousee, move and interact with the world — delivering smoother transitions, wider fields of view and greater visual comfort.

Because with varifocals, precision isn’t a luxury. It’s essential.

ZEISS TECHNOLOGY

At J.HYDE, our varifocals are powered by ZEISS lens technology — globally recognised for optical precision and advanced engineering.

ZEISS designs varifocal lenses using sophisticated calculations that account for how your eyes move, how your head naturally positions, and how you interact with the world around you. This results in wider visual zones, smoother transitions and more natural vision across all distances.

ZEISS SMARTLIFE

Designed for modern, screen-heavy lifestyles. SmartLife varifocals support frequent focus changes between phones, screens and distance, delivering effortless everyday vision with reduced visual strain.

ZEISS DRIVESAFE

Optimised for driving and low-light conditions. DriveSafe varifocals enhance contrast, reduce glare from headlights, and provide greater stability for distance and intermediate vision.

Each ZEISS varifocal lens is selected based on how you live, work and move — never as a one-size-fits-all solution.

WHY MEASUREMENTS MATTER

A varifocal lens is only as good as the measurements behind it.

At J.HYDE, we use ZEISS digital measuring technology to ensure your lenses are aligned accurately to your face, posture and natural visual behaviour — not estimated using manual methods.

In our Birmingham store, we use the ZEISS VisuFit 1000, an advanced 3D facial mapping system that captures ultra-precise data to determine exact lens positioning in real-world wear.

In Mere Green, we use ZEISS digital measuring tools, allowing us to accurately assess posture, eye dominance, reading and screen distances, and frame fit.

Across both locations, this level of precision ensures smoother transitions between distance, intermediate and near vision — delivering a more natural, comfortable varifocal experience from day one.

VARIFOCALS: DEMYSTIFIED – FAQ's

Are varifocals hard to get used to?

For first-time wearers, it can feel different at first and that’s completely normal. More often than not, people find it hard to get use to varifocals if measurements are incorrectly made. At J.HYDE, we combine the right lens design, frame selection, and precision measuring to make adaptation a smooth process.

What if I don’t get on with my varifocals?

Your comfort matters. If something doesn’t feel right, we encourage you to return so we can assess, adjust and refine your lenses.

Successful varifocals rely on collaboration. Expert fitting, clear communication and ongoing support.

Are varifocals right for me?

Varifocals are ideal for those who want clear, uninterrupted vision across all distances without switching between multiple pairs of glasses. In some cases, alternative solutions may be more appropriate for specific tasks. That’s why every recommendation at J.HYDE is guided by expert consultation, not assumption. The right answer is always the one that works best for you.

Do I need a new eye test to get varifocals?

If your prescription is less than two years, we can review it during your consultation. If it’s due for an update, we’ll advise you accordingly.

Our priority is ensuring your lenses are based on accurate and up-to-date information. If you need an eye test, you can book one here.

Are varifocals noticeable to others?

No. Varifocals have no visible line and look just like standard lenses. The transition between distances is seamlessly built into the lens design making them very discreet.

Can varifocals be used for screen work?

Yes, when designed properly. Screen use is one of the most important factors we consider during your consultation.

By understanding how and where you use screens, we can recommend a lens design that provides comfortable intermediate vision and reduces unnecessary strain throughout the day.
