Eye tests

Do you offer eye tests?

Yes. We offer private eye tests at both our Birmingham City Centre studio on Cannon Street and our Mere Green studio in Sutton Coldfield. Every eye test is conducted personally by Vik, our resident optometrist with over twenty years of clinical experience.
Eye test — £40. Complimentary with any prescription lens purchase.*

How much do you charge for eye tests?

Our private eye test is £40.
It is complimentary with any complete prescription eyewear or prescription lens purchase.*

How long does an eye test take?

Unlike a standard high street eye test, your J.HYDE appointment is unhurried. Allow approximately 30 to 45 minutes for your full examination. This includes a thorough discussion of your vision needs, a complete eye health assessment, and time to talk through your results and lens options.

Do you offer varifocal eye tests?

Every J.HYDE eye test is designed to accommodate varifocal wearers. If you currently wear varifocals or are considering them for the first time, please mention this when booking. Vik has extensive experience fitting varifocal prescriptions and will ensure your lenses are measured and dispensed with the precision required for comfortable, immediate adaptation.

How do I obtain my prescription?

Your prescription is yours by law. At J.HYDE we provide a copy of your prescription at the end of every eye test, free of charge.
If you have had a previous eye test elsewhere and would like to use your existing prescription at J.HYDE, you are welcome to bring it in. We will assess whether it is suitable and advise accordingly.
Please note that prescriptions have a recommended validity period — typically two years for adults and one year for children. We recommend booking a new eye test if your prescription is approaching or past this date.

Can I book an NHS eye test?

J.HYDE offers private eye tests only. Direct Vision, our Birmingham opticians practice, offers NHS eye tests at their Great Barr and Sheldon locations.
As a reminder, your private eye test at J.HYDE is complimentary with any prescription lens purchase — so if you're planning to buy new glasses, the cost is covered.*

Can I book an eye test for an under 16 year old?

Children under 16 are entitled to free NHS eye tests. We would recommend visiting our partner practice Direct Vision for children's NHS eye examinations.
If you would prefer a private examination for your child at J.HYDE, we are happy to accommodate this. Please call us to discuss before booking.

Do you offer contact lens examinations?

We do not routinely offer contact lens examinations. However, if you are an existing contact lens wearer and require a contact lens check as part of your eye test, please mention this when booking and we will do our best to accommodate you. Call us to discuss.

Do you offer OCT eye examinations?

We do not offer OCT examinations in studio. However, if during your eye test we identify anything that requires further investigation, we will refer you to a local eye consultant for assessment, diagnosis, and any necessary treatment. Your eye health is always the priority.

How do I know which eyewear style suits me?

Book a complimentary style consultation at either of our studios. One of our optometrists will guide you through shapes, colours, and materials to find the frame that works for your face and your life. No obligation. No pressure. Just the right pair of glasses.

What materials are used for your eyewear?

Our frames are made from premium Italian Mazzuchelli acetate, space-grade titanium, and surgical-grade stainless steel. Our Signature collection uses bio-based Rilsan PA11 — a premium material derived from castor oil, lighter than acetate and individually hand-painted in Italy.

Where are my frames produced?

Our Dr. J and HYDE collections are produced using premium Italian Mazzuchelli acetate, space-grade titanium, and surgical-grade stainless steel. Our Signature collection is individually handmade and hand-painted in Italy from bio-based Rilsan PA11. Every frame is selected or designed with one thing in mind — how it sits on a real face.

What is the Signature collection?

The Signature collection is J.HYDE's own range of individually handmade and hand-painted frames, produced in Italy from bio-based Rilsan PA11. Available in three tiers — RTW from £495, Custom from £695, and Bespoke POA. Available to view at both studios and available nowhere else. Book a consultation to find out more.

What is included in the basic price?

All J.HYDE frame prices are for the frame only. Zeiss prescription lenses are available from £80 for single vision and £250 for varifocals, with all prices including Zeiss DuraVision Platinum coating as standard. Your private eye test is complimentary with any prescription lens purchase.*

Can I bring my own frames for lenses?

Yes. We offer lens replacement into your own frames using Zeiss precision lenses. A surcharge of £75 applies. Not all frames are suitable for reglazing — bring them in and we'll assess them honestly before any commitment.
9. Do you offer frame adjustments?

Do you sell prescription sunglasses?

Yes. Our HYDE tinted collection includes prescription-ready frames. We can also fit Zeiss prescription lenses including tints and Zeiss PhotoFusion X photochromic lenses into many of our Dr. J frames. Speak to us in studio or book a style consultation to explore your options.

Do you offer frame adjustments?

Yes. If you've purchased frames from J.HYDE we offer complimentary adjustments at both studios. Walk-ins welcome. If your frames are from another practice we'll do our best to help — just come in.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. All J.HYDE frames come with a manufacturer's warranty against defects. Please see our Warranty page for full details. We also offer in-studio adjustments and minor repairs — walk-ins welcome at both studios.

Do you ship overseas?

Yes. We ship internationally. Shipping costs and delivery times vary by destination. Please see our Shipping & Delivery page for full details or contact us directly.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes. J.HYDE gift cards are available in studio and online. The perfect gift for someone who deserves the right pair of glasses.

Delivery and returns

How long does it take for my order to arrive and how much will it cost?

UK orders ship free via Royal Mail.
Online frame orders are dispatched the next working day. Delivery typically takes 2-3 working days after dispatch.
Prescription orders are made to order in our studios. Single vision lenses are ready in approximately 7-10 working days. Varifocal lenses take approximately 10-14 working days. You will be contacted when your order is ready for collection or dispatch.
For international orders please contact us directly for shipping costs and timeframes.

Can I return my eyewear/accessories?

Prescription eyewear — once glazed with prescription lenses your eyewear becomes a bespoke product made to your personal specification. As such, prescription orders are not eligible for return or refund under UK consumer law.
In exceptional circumstances we may offer an exchange at our discretion. If you have any concerns with your prescription order please contact us as soon as possible and we will do our best to help.
Frame-only and non-prescription orders — we offer a straightforward 14-day return or exchange, provided the product is unworn, undamaged, and in its original packaging. Contact us for a returns note before sending anything back.

How will I know when my prescription order is ready?

Are your stores wheelchair accessible?

Our Birmingham City Centre studio on Cannon Street is fully wheelchair accessible.
Our Mere Green studio has a small step at the entrance. If you have any mobility concerns please call ahead and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Do I need to make an appointment to visit your store?

Walk-ins are always welcome at both studios. However we recommend booking an appointment for eye tests, style consultations, lens consultations, and Signature viewings to ensure you get the time and attention you deserve.

Do you sell eye care products

Yes. We stock a range of eye care products including lens cleaning solutions and accessories at both studios. Ask a member of the team in studio for details.

Can I buy eyewear online and return it in store?

Yes. If you have purchased frames online and would like to return or exchange them, you are welcome to do so in studio within 14 days of receipt, provided the frames are unworn, undamaged, and in their original packaging.

Do you accept cash payments?

Yes. We accept cash, all major credit and debit cards, and contactless payments at both studios.

Do you offer parking near your studios?

Birmingham City Centre — NCP car parks at Moor Street Queensway and Navigation Street are within walking distance. On-street parking is available on surrounding streets subject to local restrictions.
Mere Green — Free parking is available nearby at Mulberry Walk car park.

Can I get my glasses repaired at J.HYDE?

We offer minor repairs and adjustments at both studios. Walk-ins welcome. For more significant repairs we will advise on the best course of action. Please note that repairs on frames not purchased at J.HYDE may be subject to a charge.
